I am back and it is time to get started with part two of the novel let’s get right down to it and not waste any time.
There are many key points in the second part of the novel that show us the personality of the characters. We see just how far the man will go to protect his son. The roadrat does not believe that the man will shoot, but the man does without hesitation. He puts a bullet in the man’s head when he jumped for his son and without second thought he grabs his son and runs. He did not take the time to think about what just happened or his mind is set on protecting his son and that exactly what he does. Even when they finally stop the man never brings up the fact that he shot the man, but the boy is still tramafied. Later on in this part of the novel the man reasures the boy,” Yes. We’re still the good guys.” At this point, I believe the man is also trying to convince himself he did the right thing as well. We also get to see more of the personality of the boy. We see that he truly is just an innocent boy that is trapped in a cruel world. When the two come across the man struck by lightning all the boy wants to do help the man, and it hurts him internally that he can not. He does this again when he sees a boy. He can only think about helping the boy to the point where he tells his father he does not care if he dies. For some reason, the boy wants to put someone he does not know over his own life. He begs he can share half his food and the boy he saw can come with them, but his father will not allow it. This also crushes the boy and he does not talk to the man for some time. We can say that the boy could resemble a Christ figure because of the way he is drawn to helping people even in this apocalyptic time where anyone can be an enemy.
In the second part of the novel, we get more backstory and learn more about what happened before the man and the boy begin to travel down south. The man’s wife was with them at one point but she does not have the will to keep going. The man’s wife says, ”I’ve taken a new lover.” So far this has been the most surprising part of the novel. His wife accepts Death over fighting to stay alive with her husband and try to raise there son, but she possibly only wants to die because she will anyway. She says, ”they will catch us and they will kill us.” She is taking the easier way out and is leaving the man and their son alone. She can not even say goodbye before she leaves. We see just how much she has given up. Before she leaves she tells the man,” you won’t survive for yourself. I know because I would have never come this far.” This lets us know that she only had the will to keep going because she was living for her husband, and now we see the man still pushing on to protect his son. If his son wasn’t with him I honestly believe he would be dead by now.
That’s all for today now folks. My next post will be me comparing this part of the movie with the book.
